A geodetic set of directions consists of at least two directions and thus of at least one SEDI statement and one consecutive SED& statement. The station name may appear only in the first statement of a set of directions. The subsequent SED& statements must not include the station name.

If a SEDI statement does not contain a standard deviation, then that of the preceding SEDI statement is used. The standard deviations may vary for the observations within one set of directions, which may be advantageous if a target point is very poorly visible or at an extremely short distance from the station.

The direction of rotation is the same as for normal theodolite measurements. No reduction to the first target is necessary.
